RAKU FIRING

‘Raku’ is a traditional firing process originating from Japan. I was introduced to this process in 1995 and have been hooked ever since.

The technique involves rapid removal of pottery from a hot kiln and cooling it quickly in combustible materials. This harsh firing method creates unique surface effects but results in a fragile body. The copper flashings produced as part of the reduction process usually oxidise to turquoise over time.

The unpredictable nature of the process lends itself to sculptural work and enhances the depth of surface pattern and decoration. It is a lesson in relinquishing control and trusting the elements.

Handle the artwork with care, keep dry, and clean gently with a soft cloth.
